Travel Agents

Travel agents sell travel related products and services to end-user customers on behalf of third party travel suppliers, such as airlines, hotels, tour companies, and cruise lines.

They help travelers sort through vast amounts of information to help them make the best possible travel arrangements.

Advanced computer systems and telecommunications networks make it possible for a growing number of travel agents to work at home.

Education and training:

The minimum requirement for those interested in becoming a travel agent is a high school diploma or equivalent. Much of the training is provided on the job.

Travel agent courses are available in public adult education programs, online, and in community colleges.

Employment:

Travel agents held about 101,000 jobs;  the top 10 percent earned more than $46,270.

Nearly two-thirds worked for travel agencies. Another 13 percent were self-employed.
